Midterm Project Demo

Attendance for the Midterm Project Demo is MANDATORY!

Date: Wednesday, March 19, 2025

Professor Gannis and I are looking for a few student volunteers to meet us on the SECOND FLOOR of 370 Jay Media Commons 221-224 “Ballrooms A-D” at 1:30pm to help us move tables and chairs into the space. Please let us know if you can help that day.

Midterm Demo Day Prep (BEFORE Midterm Demo Day)

IF you haven't already, please sign up for a padlet account if you want your name to be automatically attributed to your comments. Otherwise, type your name before writing your comments/feedback.

By or before Sunday, March 16, 2025, at noon EST, please post on the Midterm Demo Day Padlet [link TBA]

  • FIRST your teaser video. Please feel free to use the Google slide template that I shared with you before (File -> Make A Copy) as a very quick way to share the essentials of your project with others as a quick exported video. We discussed two ways to export video in class.

    • File-> Share -> Publish to the Web: Select how many seconds you want the slide to auto-advance, check start slideshow, and (optional) check restart the slideshow IF you want it to loop.

    • Export as a Powerpoint (File-> Download); Open in Powerpoint, then File->Export-> File Format->mp4

    • Here is a third, use the Google Chrome Creator Studio Extension.

  • Link(s) directly to the thing itself.

  • You can also show multiple assets for your project demo. Put each one in a separate padlet card.

  • Please look at the prototype(s) of students through the Midterm Demo Day Padlet [link TBA] BEFORE 2pm on midterm project demo day and leave comments for at least 3 students who are not in our section. Also, leave comments for other students if you look at their projects. If everyone does this, you can spend less time talking and showing your project and more time getting feedback on your project.

Midterm Demo Day Format (The Day of)
  • We will meet on the SECOND FLOOR of 370 Jay at 1:45pm in Media Commons 221-224 “Ballrooms A-D.” Prof Carla Gannis and I will be on hand to help you get seated at the tables. BRING your LAPTOP to present your work. Make sure your laptop is fully charged.

  • There will be five rounds of 20 minutes.

  • You will be paired with a student for 20 min total. Do not pair with a student from your own section.

  • Each student in the pair will have 10 min total.

    • Up to 5 min for your presentation.

    • The remaining time of your 10 min will be for feedback from the student you are paired with.

  • Then switch and repeat. After 20 minutes, one student in the pair will move to the right; every student will be paired with a new student.

Guidelines for Approaching Midterm Demo Day
  • Think of this as a show and tell.

  • Be prepared to deliver an elevator pitch of your project verbally.

  • Be prepared to demo the project at its current state.

  • When you share your prototype(s) during your midterm demo, try to bypass showing it on your process website.

  • In other words, if you have images just show the images using preview, etc.

  • If you have created a website, animatic or animation on vimeo or youtube, etc, go directly to that link in a web browser.

  • Alternatively, you can click on your padlet note and go fullscreen.

  • Discuss what does (and does not) your prototype(s) explore at this moment in time.

  • Quickly list next steps.

  • Come up with questions to ask others about your project direction(s).

Guidelines for Approaching Your Midterm Project Demo
  • Do NOT create a supporting presentation of the artifact itself.

  • Make sure you present the prototype(s) itself. i.e. Show while Telling. Do not Tell without Showing.

  • Make sure your elevator pitch is just that. Short. 1 to 2 sentences maximum. The teaser video you created should be the first card in your column.

  • Make sure you spend the bulk of your 5 min presenting your prototype(s).

  • Use your entire 10 min. If students are not giving you feedback, ask them questions you are currently grappling with.

  • There should be peer-to-peer feedback and conversation.
